DBZ and the Speed Of Light Boy, am I sick and tired of THIS one. One thing that keeps being brought up in arguments is that it doesn't make logical sense for Goku to move faster than light in DBZ. Let's look at this rationally. Logically, if you do move faster than light, you require infinite energy to do it as you approach infinite mass and therefore develop infinite gravity which in turn proceeds to suck in the infinite universe and destroy everything that is. But Goku doesn't. Logically, if you do move faster than sound, you rip a hole in the air prompting a thunderclap which should shred your clothes. But Goku doesn't. Logically, if you move from one point to another completely instantaneously, you should leave behind a range of thunderclaps, but Goku doesn't. Logically, it's impossible to create 'infinite' energy generators. So, who says logic applies? When Goku was a kid, he dodged four bullets after they were fired, EASILY. This puts his speed at that age somewhere in the realm of Mach 18+. At least. But Roshi's Kamehameha cleared the distance from the Earth to the Moon so fast it was effectively instantaneous, and that prior to that, Goku had dodged these Kamehameha. The distance from the earth to the moon in a fraction of a second is not to be sneezed at - it takes four full seconds for LIGHT to reach the moon. That Kamehameha would have had to have been travelling faster than light. But Goku dodged it. Whether or not he waited until after Roshi let it loose, however, is ambiguous. The Radditz example is not. So Goku would have to be at least supersonic. Wow, nifty. However, going by the actual power levels _documented_ in the manga, Bata could move at c at least as fast as Goku could dodge several bullets at once. However, given that Radditz dodged a beam of pure energy with no mass whatsoever, was able to _look at the beam coming at him, scan it_ and _THEN_ dodge indicates he could DEFINITELY move faster than light. It has been claimed that because Radditz uttered noise _before_ he dodged the Makkankousappou, it laterally couldn't even be moving faster than _sound_. Which is bad logic _on its own_, but the maths of it simply don't stick in light of later events. When Freeza and Goku are fighting, their fight makes noise. This noise is heard by Piccolo, Gohan, and Kuririn. Therefore, we can concede that light speed does not in any way damage one's sound effects. There are three possible points at which one can be deemed 'faster than light' going off this logic. 100, 1,000, and 19,000. I use the middle estimate due to availability of DBZ over DB, but were I _to_ use the lowest estimate, everything I've said about Goku goes up by a multiple of ten.
